Out on Card Sound Road in Key Largo — hang a left off US 1 at the Last Chance Saloon and keep going — Alabama Jack’s is an Old Florida roadhouse built on barges over a tranquil canal, operating since 1947. Motorcycles out front, live music on the deck, and a line spilling into the parking lot: this is the Keys the way they used to be, casual and unpretentious, with mangrove views and wildlife right off the water.

Come hungry and order the Seafood Sampler for 2 — fried shrimp, steamed shrimp, fish fingers, crab cakes, and three sides of your choice, a spread so generous it covered a second and third meal. The star of the show is the conch fritter: golden, tender, and honestly one of the best we’ve ever had anywhere. Dress casual, get there early before the crowd, and if you can snag two seats at the main bar, you’re in for a good meal with a relaxing canal view.
